Operation Upgrade, the oldest nongovernmental literacy organisation in South Africa, battles the problems of poverty, malnutrition, and HIV/AIDS through literacy development. Operation Upgrade’s growing network of trained community facilitators works with the poorest and most marginalized of people in South African society. Operation Upgrade’s mission is to assist social change and development in South Africa through the support and provision of adult literacy and adult basic education and training. We work mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, the home of the Zulu people, although we will train literacy educators in other provinces. In KwaZulu-Natal adult illiteracy is high and HIV and AIDS are prevalent.
The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy was awarded to Operation Upgrade of South Africa, for the "KwaNibela Project", and continues the Organisation's 40-year history of commitment and change.

Didaxis offers placement assessments (multimedia or guides) in Communications in English and Mathematical Literacy. This is a graded instrument covering ABET Levels 1-4 (NQF Level 1). The ABET material developed by eDegree, with the assistance of industry specialists, is designed to meet the needs of the learner. We believe strongly that when facilitating Communication, Numeracy, and Life Skills to learners, there should be personal contact with facilitators to help promote the learning process. Programmes are delivered in a face-to-face environment, where books are provided, with dynamic multimedia learning material as an optional enhancement.
The learning material, with its distinct South African flavour, enables illiterate adult learners to cover approximately nine years of "traditional schooling" in less than four years of part-time learning. Should learners already have a concrete understanding of the basics through life experience and/or prior learning, they are able to by-pass the lower levels and begin learning at a more meaningful and constructive point.
